Hebrews 13:1-6
"Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have,
for he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'"
Reflect:
Contentment is hard. There is always a better job out there. There is always a
bigger house in a nicer neighborhood. There is always a newer model car or a
latest, must-have fashion. It seems like every month, some company comes out
with the biggest and best, barely legal driver that enables a duffer to hit a
golf ball 290 yards. I've been in garages that have entire sections dedicated
to last year's driver.
Contentment, though, is important. It is a discipline that the Holy Spirit
works in the lives of the followers of Christ. It is important because it is
instructive. Contentment reminds us that there is a God and we are not him.
Contentment reminds us that God "will never leave us nor forsake us."
When we are discontent or covetous, we doubt the faithfulness of God. We are
saying, "God, despite what you may say, you have left me and you have forsaken
me - in this area." Covetousness casts doubt on the goodness of God, and so is
an insidious sin that lurks in our hearts and deprives us of the contentment we
are meant to find in God alone.
The good news is that, in Christ, we have all that we could ever ask or
imagine. Paul says that "all the promises of God find their Yes" in Christ. The
author of Hebrews does not say, "Keep your life free from the love of money
because money is bad." He says, "Keep your life free from the love of money
because God is good."
