Counseling Opportunities

Specialized Counseling: Trauma

Trauma can result from a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. We experience trauma when we encounter these situations that overwhelm our ability to cope.

Hurricane Harvey left many of us feeling powerless, anxious, overwhelmed and hopeless. As we approach the anniversary of this event, many of us might experience some of the same feelings we had a year ago following the hurricane and it’s aftermath.

Trauma can come in other forms too. Some of us have experienced trauma through broken relationships, death, abuse, or even an unexpected event like a car accident. Trauma can manifest itself through panic attacks, complicated grief, disturbing memories, phobias, performance anxiety, or addictions. These experiences combine to make the traumatic event all the more distressing. And they can have a lasting, negative effect that interferes with how we relate to others and how we see the world.

It is important to address trauma in a safe, consistent, and thoughtful way. If you would like to explore this particular issue, please contact Katie Ashby.

Our Team

Katie Ashby, M.A., L.P.C.

Katie earned her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Communications from Vanderbilt University in 1997 and completed her Masters in Counseling from Houston Graduate School of Theology in 2015.

Katie’s enjoys working with adults struggling with relationship concerns, anxiety, grief, the effects of past trauma, issues of personal identity, and faith confusion. She works to help clients strengthen their ability to connect with themselves, with God, and with others. She is committed to integrating her clinical training and Christian faith in order to address the needs of the whole person.

In her work with couples, Katie utilizes the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and SYMBIS (Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts) to reduce conflict and increase connection for engaged and married couples. For those who have experienced trauma, Katie utilizes her training in EMDR to help clients resolve disturbing material or memories connected to past trauma. This approach allows clients to view this material in a new and less distressing way.

Caroline McKee, M.A.B.C.

Caroline McKee is a recent graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary with a Masters degree in Biblical Counseling. She completed her undergraduate degree in Child and Family Studies at Baylor University in 2012.

Caroline enjoys working with adults struggling with interpersonal relationships, marital conflict, personal or career identity, and painful life circumstances. Caroline also enjoys partnering with families and children as they walk through behavioral struggles, loss or grief, and conflict through play therapy and parent consultations.

She is thankful for the opportunity to integrate biblical truth and clinical training in her work with clients. Caroline believes that the counseling relationship is unique in its ability to provide a safe environment for vulnerability, growth, and change.

“…what is man that you are mindful of him,

the son of man that you care for him?

You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings

and crowned him with glory and honor.”
